Subject: inkscape: When trying to open any dialog, WMaker restarts
Package: inkscape
Version: 0.40-2
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable
If I start Inkscape and ask it to open a file (or draw any element on
screen and ask for its properties, or any other action that requires
opening a dialog), my window manager (WindowMaker) seems to crash and
restart.
Inkscape does not always dump information regarding this problem, up to
now, I only get this warning while trying to open a new file:
(inkscape:13614): Gtk-WARNING **: Could not find the icon
'gnome-fs-home'. The 'hicolor' theme
was not found either, perhaps you need to install it.
You can get a copy from:
http://
I think this might indicate some unfulfilled dependency.
Also, after this problem has ocurred, if I click the 'close' button on
the Inkscape window, it does not respond anymore. There must also be
some resource leak, as I just checked memory usage and (after some 10
such events I have had) the X binary is hogging up 383MB RAM (only 38M
shared).
Thank you very much,
-Gunnar Wolf

Sounds like a windowmaker problem to me...
In Debian Bug tracker #287459, Peter Moulder (peter-moulder) wrote : please refile against unstable wmaker | #4 |
Inkscape works fine with the wmaker in testing (0.80.2-0.4), whether I
try inkscape_0.39-7, inkscape_0.40-2 or a build from CVS.
Whereas with wmaker_0.91.0-2 in unstable, neither 0.39-7 nor 0.40-2 of
inkscape work.
Other evidence that the bug is with unstable's wmaker is that I've never
experienced these problems with fvwm, and I haven't heard other inkscape
users encounter this problem.
The workaround is for users to downgrade wmaker to, say, the version in
testing. (Or to try switching to a different window manager.)

[Maybe this should be split off into a separate bug report.]
Inkscape started requiring gnome-fs-home icon at
2004-07-24 18:54:19 +0000, when src/file.cpp, src/dialogs/
and src/dialogs/
commit comment "start using new Gtk2.4 dialogs".
Note that the new Inkscape code doesn't explicitly request the
gnome-fs-home icon, so I'm not sure whether the bug should properly be
attributed to gtk or to inkscape. I suggest adding a Depends or
Recommends to inkscape to start with, and somehow bring the problem to
the attention of libgtk2.0-0 maintainers (e.g. by filing a bug report).
zgrep gnome-fs-home in unstable/
suitable-looking gnome-fs-home in the following packages:
gnome-
gnome-icon-theme
gnome-
gnome-
gtk2-
gtk2-
gtk2-engines-mist
gnome-icon-theme might be the preferred package in that it's a
dependency of gnome-core, though maybe gtk2-engines-
it's significantly smaller than gnome-icon-theme.
Note that I haven't checked whether each of the above is sufficient by
itself to satisfy the dependency, I'm merely guessing from file names.
I.e. I don't know for sure that it's safe for the added
Depends (or Recommends?) item to be
gnome-icon-theme | gtk2-engines-
or whether to pick just one or two.

Hm, might be. But if it doesn't give you this message always, this might
also be another problem. Could you plese chck if you have the
gnome-icon-theme package installed and tell me the result?
The theme mentioned in the error massage is in the hicolor-icon-theme
package, but since it does not contain a gnome-fs-home icon, I don't
think it solves your problem. BTW, which is the theme you use for your
gtk-apps?

I can not confirm that. If I use this version of wmaker here on ppc
unstable everything works as expected. This is why I thought this must be
related to the missing icon. If this is the case, we must Depend: on the
theme packages as you suggest in your other mail. From the name I'd
think that gnome-icon-theme is the best choice since it sounds as a
fallback solution. But using package1 | package2 .. is even better.

I have basically no Gnome packages installed:
gwolf@lactop:~$ dpkg -l *gnome*|grep ii
ii libgnomecanvas 2.8.0-1 A powerful object-oriented display - runtime
ii libgnomecanvas 2.8.0-1 A powerful object-oriented display - common
I don't know where to search which GTK theme I am using - I guess I am
using the default one ;-)

After a few tests it seems that if inkscape cannot find the icons such as
gnome-fs-home.png it can simply draw the dialog box without the icons. However I
still recommmend you depend upon gnome-icon-theme to give your users the best
experience.
I suspect the bug is actually in wmaker since the problem goes away if the
version of wmaker is downgraded (according to the submitter).
Since this bug is mostly unreproducible as people have attempted to test it I
would change the severity to important since this is currently preventing a HIGH
priority upload entering testing.
