Bug Description

I have three machines plugged into a Belkin Soho F1DS104L KVM switch. As a KVM switch, it has an onboard hub that connects the mouse/keyboard to each machine. If the USB cable for this is plugged in, the boxes will hang during startup immediately after "NET: Registered protocol family 1".

The boxes all PXE-boot off the network with Ubuntu 10.04 through 12.04 depending on the bootloader selection. All versions are affected. This also occurs using an Ubuntu 12.10 desktop image loaded from a USB drive.

As of right now, the easiest workaround is to unplug the USB cable while booting up. However, the machines aren't the most accessible and this partially defeats the purpose of the KVM.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1145018/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

I think this goes under the kernel, but I'm not sure how to add it. Tells me to narrow my search results under the package identifier.

Quick update on this. I accidentally found that different USB ports respond differently. There is a single port than consistently causes issues on the ZOTAC IONITX-A-U motherboard. I didn't consider that as a point of failure since it was happening across several machines. I can provide more information if needed.

Joseph Salisbury (jsalisbury) wrote : Re: Belkin KVM causes hang on boot

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.9 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Nathan Graves, I'm struggling to find on Zotac's website the BIOS version from their website via:

If you contacted them, would they have a BIOS update available for you?
