Epson Stylus Photo 895 will not print

Bug #114290 reported by John Cottier

cupsys (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

When logged into the ubuntu desktop (or Kubuntu desktop) Gnome print manager correctly detects and installed the gutenprint driver. But when a test page is sent, the print job just stops and the printer does nothing. In Kubuntu the printer is not detected and Epson..895 is not on the list, However if Epson..870 driver is manually selected, the printer works fine, albeit on a lower resolution. I have attached. I have printing bug info, but cant see a way to attach yet.

Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better.

This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers.
You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage .

I have classified this bug as a bug in "cupsys".

Another person has also reported this problem (see bug #111038) and was able to solve the problem with the commands given below.
I suspect the problem is a conflict between the distribution independent gutenprinter driver package from openprinting.org and the cupsys-driver-gutenprint ubuntu package because both are the same version 5.0.0.99.1 in Feisty. It makes no sense to install the same version of gutenprint twice.
Did you install the openprinting distribution independent gutenprint package in Edgy and have you done a distribution upgrade to Feisty or did you do a clean installation of Feisty?

Please make sure the openprinting distribution independent gutenprint package has been removed, then reinstall the default feisty cupsys-driver-gutenprint package with these commands:

$ sudo dpkg --purge --force-depends gutenprint
$ sudo dpkg --purge --force-depends cupsys-driver-gutenprint

followed by a:

$ sudo apt-get install cupsys-driver-gutenprint

Ok thanks for educating me. I will look that up. This is my first bug
report for Ubuntu and I thought it best to leave the package selection
out rather than guess the wrong one.

Hello Pascal, I started with a clean install of Kubuntu Feisty from the
Live CD, formatting my existing partitions. When the printer was not
detected or listed, I looked at the Kubuntu documenation which suggested
going to LinuxPrinting.org
It was here I found my printer with the gutenprint driver, and I
followed their instructions for Ubuntu install using Alien. The problem
is, I was unaware this driver was already installed as the KDE print
manager did not list it.

After completing the commands you asked me to, the KDE print manager
behaves as before (895 not listed). However adding printer using Gnome
print manager now works fine. The printer succesfully been sent a test
page! Thanks for your help.

So it looks you had 2 issues and still have 1:
1) Your Epson Stylus 895 printer is not listed in KDE Printing Manager, this is a known issue and has already been reported as bug #99372. A workaround for installing your printer in KDE is using the CUPS web interface: http://localhost:631/ from your web browser.
2) You were unable to print because you have installed the openprinting distribution independent gutenprint package, which happens to be the same version as the cupsys-driver-gutenprint ubuntu package in Ubuntu Feisty. This part has been resolved by removing the openprinting distribution independent gutenprint package with the above commands.

Since issue (1) caused you to install the openprinting distribution independent gutenprint package which gave you issue (2) and issue (1) has been resolved I will now close this bug report as a duplicate of bug #99372.
