Bug Description

I am using Xubuntu 7.04 (Feisty Fawn).
When starting k3b, i get to see the starting screen but nothing else happens. Checking /var/log/messages, i get the following:

May 12 12:17:16 atropos kernel: [ 1417.433349] ide: failed opcode was: unknown
May 12 12:17:16 atropos kernel: [ 1417.433405] hdc: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }

Those messages continue and the starting screen remains on the display, as i am not able to kill the corresponding k3b-process:

r0bert@atropos:~$ ps -A | grep k3b
 9253 ? 00:00:00 k3b
r0bert@atropos:~$ sudo kill -9 9253
Password:
r0bert@atropos:~$ ps -A | grep k3b
 9253 ? 00:00:00 k3b

The only way I have found so far to get rid of this is to reboot the machine.
The following informations might be of relevance:

r0bert@atropos:~$ uname -a

The problem did not occur in Xubuntu 6.04 (Dapper Drake).

i get the same error in /var/log/messages

Jul 21 00:37:23 rossak kernel: [ 488.580000] hdc: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
Jul 21 00:37:23 rossak kernel: [ 488.580000] ide: failed opcode was: unknown

for the sake of conserving space...i did not include the rest of the lines similar to these 2 ( there are 30 MB worth of error messages lithe this ).

I haven't tried gutsy as the laptop i'm working from is for work related activities...but this is really anoying ...as i cant user the CD/DVD drive in this thing.

If you want to kill the process using your writer you might want to issue the comand:

hdparm -w /dev/hdc

to do an ATAPI reset on the drive...and after that try to kill k3b
