My experience is that the crash occurs when posting in the kubuntu forum
and hitting the return key.

So you can reproduce regularaly? What extensions/plugins do you use?
Does it happen if you start with

  # firefox -safe-mode

as well?

Yes

I have just been on the kubuntu forum and the first time I hit return
whilst posting it crashes, (instant shutdown) even when using Firefox
safe mode.

On restart of session, I find I have lost some (not a lot) of text and
the problem does not recur.
