Bug Description

7.04 does not seem to recognize my cd/dvd burner as a burner. It works fine as a reader but it won't burn. I have attempted to get help with this on the forums (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=434443) but no one seems to have any suggestions. There is another user reporting the same issue. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I am new to Linux..

Anyway, I ran "sudo hdparm /dev/hdc" in a terminal session and got this result:

/dev/hdc:
IO_support = 0 (default 16-bit)
unmaskirq = 0 (off)
using_dma = 1 (on)
keepsettings = 0 (off)
readonly = 0 (off)
readahead = 256 (on)
HDIO_GETGEO failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device

I also did "/usr/lib/nautilus-cd-burner/list_cddrives" with the following result:

Can you talk about your hardware specifications ?

When you insert a black disk Does Ubuntu ask if you want to make a CD ?

Here are the specifications for my system. It is a stock HP Media
Center m7330n. I took these directly from HP's site. As for prompting
me when I insert a blank disk, I do not get prompted unless I tell
Ubuntu to mount the disk. If I try to burn a disk, I get this message:

There was an error writing to the disc:
Error while writing to disc. Try a lower speed.

I have tried to burn a 1.0x speed with the same result.

I can't burn anything independent of media used and speed. Same burner works fine under openSUSE 10.2 where it is handled as IDE device (/dev/hdc). Related to this: There are no burning problems with Feisty on a 5 year old laptop where the burner (Toshiba ... - no detailed information right now) is handled as IDE device (/dev/hdc) as well.

I'd similar situation as bierholen. After I upgrade from 6.10 to 7.04, all IDE devices are recognized as serial device, e.g. harddisk becomes "sdaX", dvd-writer becomes "scd0". When I try to burn CD with the build-in program, it can finish writing image file, and burn for a little while (less then 10%). Then, it will report "Error while writing to disc. Try a lower speed.". No matter how slow the speed I choose, it still fails. Here is the spec of my laptop:

When I upgraded from 6.06 to 7.04, I'm having errors burning CDRs. The hardware hasn't changed at all between version upgrades, so I don't think hardware is the issue. At first I thought it might be wodim, since that's replaced cdrecord. However, I switched to cdrdao and am still having problems.

Cannot write a DVD+R with Hardy (8.04) on a Sony Vaio VGN-A270P. It worked in Gutsy (7.10). Just finished another attempt to write a DVD - system current with updates. Attached the session.log.

I also have this problem in Hardy / Intrepid / Jaunty on Advent 6001 laptop with QSI SDW 082 drive.

Is it not possible to mount this drive as IDE without SCSI emulation?

No-one seems able to help.

I am having the same problem on Jaunty, it seems this bug isn't hardware specific.
Looked everywhere, tried everything ... big waste of time...
This is a very old bug, and no one seems to be doing anything about it.

As I read on the forums for some people a kernel update helped. Which CD writers do you use and what kernel do you run? Thank you for telling us!
