Installer creates a user before setting up NIS

During the post-reboot part of the Ubuntu install (is this is the
"base-installer"?) I'm requested to type in a username / password.

As I'm on a NIS network, I'd like this local user to match my NIS uid and gid.
For this to work NIS needs to be configured before the user is created.

Setting up NIS afterwards wasn't too complicated, but I did have to change my
local uid and gid to match the NIS settings.

This bug is 1,5 year old, so i'm curious. Have you tryed an install another system after this one?

Maby Colin Watson knows if something has happend with this, or is going to happend.

The reason why I ask is, that i'm trying to get rid of some bugs, and either you or the Assigned person has responded with any comments.

No, I haven't installed any other system after this one.

One of the points with running Debian based stuff is that upgrades actually work :-), so I haven't had to re-install since I first upgraded from [other distro].

I filed this bug to help other people install Ubuntu, for my own part I was able to clean up after the installer by hand.

The bug's still there. We have no code at all to do anything with NIS in the installer, so fixing this would be a moderately significant development project, I think.

There's value in having automated NIS setup in the installer, so this should stay around as a wishlist, although personally I don't expect to have time to look at it soon. Anyone who fancies taking on the project of educating user-setup about NIS setup is welcome.

Altough you can install ubuntu as experienced user, where you are promted for a root password and omit the user creation.

I still give you a better solution, create the user admin. The user admin is the only local user, designed to boot you out of trouble and to do administrative taskts. If you still want to alow nis user to administer the the computer, add that user to the sudoers list.

It is way safer to do it that way.

I think you might need to call it something other than admin to avoid confusing user-setup with respect to the separate admin group (the confusion is a bug, really); but yes, I kind of agree.
