Yes, that's true. I am also now using version 8.40.4. So try to install latest drivers available from ATI. A good step-by-step description how to do so is located at ubuntu.com (direct link: http://tinyurl.com/39kpsy). I also had the same problems with my PCI-e X600: Starting eg. OO just showed me the splash screen for half a second and then it just closed /wo any error-msg. Now with my 'selfmade' fglrx drivers everything runs just fine. It's really worth taking some minutes to compile your own *.deb's ;)

Do you still have problems with using the fglrx on Ubuntu 7.10 with OpenOffice 2.3.0?

Thanks,

Yes. Dies silently at start up. When starting in a shell I get the following printout:

** (process:5874): WARNING **: Unknown error forking main binary / abnormal early exit ...

When I unchecked the restricted driver and went back to the default (radeon or ati or whatever is default) it works alright. Then switched back to fglrx and the problem came back.

However I plan to do a clean installation since my installation was from Gutsy Beta, using both the up-date manager and aptitude, and now it seems like they are not quite in sync. Maybe the system is a little bit screwed up. I'll report back after I performed a clean upgrade.
