Bug Description

After a recent upgrade the unity launcher autohide lost transparency and other programs began apparently hanging. I saw these upgrade lines in dpkg.log:

2013-02-27 15:14:16 upgrade libgl1-mesa-dri:i386 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 9.0-0ubuntu1
2013-02-27 15:14:18 upgrade libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 9.0-0ubuntu1
2013-02-27 15:14:22 upgrade libgl1-mesa-dev:amd64 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 9.0-0ubuntu1
2013-02-27 15:14:23 upgrade mesa-common-dev:amd64 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 9.0-0ubuntu1
2013-02-27 15:14:24 upgrade libgl1-mesa-glx:i386 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 9.0-0ubuntu1
2013-02-27 15:14:25 upgrade libgl1-mesa-glx:amd64 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 9.0-0ubuntu1
2013-02-27 15:14:26 upgrade libglapi-mesa:amd64 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 9.0-0ubuntu1
2013-02-27 15:14:26 upgrade libglapi-mesa:i386 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 9.0-0ubuntu1
2013-02-27 15:14:31 upgrade libxatracker1:amd64 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 9.0-0ubuntu1
2013-02-27 15:14:32 upgrade libosmesa6:i386 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 9.0-0ubuntu1

and backed those out with

sudo apt-get install libgl1-mesa-dev:amd64=9.0-0ubuntu1 mesa-common-dev:amd64=9.0-0ubuntu1 libgl1-mesa-dri:amd64=9.0-0ubuntu1 libgl1-mesa-dri:i386=9.0-0ubuntu1 libgl1-mesa-glx:i386=9.0-0ubuntu1 libgl1-mesa-glx:amd64=9.0-0ubuntu1 libglapi-mesa:amd64=9.0-0ubuntu1 libglapi-mesa:i386=9.0-0ubuntu1 libxatracker1:amd64=9.0-0ubuntu1 libosmesa6:i386=9.0-0ubuntu1

now everything works again.

Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

I too had graphics issues after this upgrade. I am using Ubuntu 12.10 in a VMware Fusion virtual machine on a Mac. After upgrading mesa and xatracker to 9.0.2-0ubuntu0.1 I no longer get video playback in Totem. All videos show a black video window. Audio works and the time indicator progresses as expected, but no picture is shown. I could not find a relevant warning or error in the xsession log. After reverting mesa and xatracker back to 9.0, everything works again.

Downgrading these three packages to 9.0 is enough for me to get a working system:
libgl1-mesa-glx libglapi-mesa libxatracker1

I can upgrade the other packages to 9.0.2 without any apparent problems.

Switching to a Radeon 6670 GPU also eliminates the misbehavior.

My problems were fixed in Ubuntu 13.04. This may not affect the original poster though.

Jim Hill, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better.

As per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases, Ubuntu 12.10 reached EOL on May 16, 2014.

Is this reproducible in a supported release?
