Bug Description

Computer crashed at log in

Version Edubuntu 12.10

History: My daddy's Computer had a problem updating Linux kernel. I tried to install it from terminal but it didn't work, conflict error

I do not know enough to otherwise sort the problem. (I am only 11 years old)
when I rebooted the computer we could not get past the login screen.

we tried to read the partition with 8.04 LTS, no success. Could not get a desktop with a newer version booting with the CD, my daddy was desperate to get backup of documents and E-mails and address book. No luck.

Tried repair with 12.04 LTS CD, didn't understand how to do it and corrupted grub.
Found several 1.1 GB swap files that was created. Deleted them and reused the space in the Ubuntu partition, I did not format the partition

Installed 12.04 on the same partition with same user name. When we logged in the home folder was 100% intact with all the documents. After reinstalling Evolution all the E-mails was 100% intact. Grub loader was also fixed.

Had to reinstall printer, scanner, plug-ins and some software. My daddy was happy.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1134848/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.
