Bug Description

The alx driver immediately stops working after the module is loaded.

WORKAROUND: I deleted the alx driver version included with Ubuntu linux-image-3.8.0-11-generic: package and manually built the driver from the latest linux-next compat-drivers archive from http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download/stable/ (https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/backports/2013/03/04/compat-drivers-2013-03-04-u.tar.bz2). It works.

Brad Figg (brad-figg) wrote : Missing required logs.

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. From a terminal window please run:

apport-collect 1134651

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

Did this issue start happening after an update/upgrade? Was there a kernel version where you were not having this particular problem? This will help determine if the problem you are seeing is the result of the introduction of a regression, and when this regression was introduced.

importance: Undecided → Medium

@Joseph Salisbury:
The alx driver was not part of the 3.5.0-24-generic Quantal Quetzal kernel. Before upgrading to raring Ringtail and Kernel 3.8 I built the driver manually with the instructions from http://www.linuxfoundation.org/collaborate/workgroups/networking/alx and it worked. Now the driver is part of the linux-image-extra-3.8.0-7-generic package and i get those errors.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.8 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

The alx driver is not in part of the mainline kernel, so it is not present in linux-image-3.8.0-030800-generic_3.8.0-030800.201302181935_amd64.deb or in linux-image-extra-3.8.0-030800-generic_3.8.0-030800.201302181935_amd64.deb . In linux-image-extra-3.5.0-24-generic the driver is part of the "ubuntu" subdirectory, so i think it was included as a patch by the Ubuntu kernel team?

I deleted the alx driver version included with Ubuntu linux-image-3.8.0-11-generic: package and manually built the driver from the latest linux-next compat-drivers archive from http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Download/stable/ (https://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/projects/backports/2013/03/04/compat-drivers-2013-03-04-u.tar.bz2). It works. So I think the driver included with the Ubuntu kernel needs to be updated to the latest compat-wireless version.

Sturm Flut, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>
