Bug Description
Had 6.10 for a couple of months now, so am a newbe. Got KDE and Gnome loaded OK and can switch between them OK. Ubunto appears to be a good OS. Except for the updater and Adept Manager. Both appear to fail to manage dependencies correctly, frequently locking up and having to be forced with 'sudo apt-get -f install' followed by 'sudo dpkg --configure -a'. That gets Adept Manager and the Updater running again, but leaves a permanent 'Updates Available' Icon in the task bar and the failed download listed in Updater - which will lock again up if another attempt to install is made.
The upgrade to 7.04 appeared to d/load OK and then install. At the very end if installation a fatal error notification came up, would I like to submit a bug report? Yes, but registering to do this closed the report, which was quite complex. (If there's a log file somewhere, please let me know, and I will forward it if you wish).
I now appear to have a 7.04 load with some errors in System Settings:
User Management - The module User Management could not be loaded. Possible reasons: An error occurred during your last KDE upgrade leaving an orphaned control module. You have old third party modules lying around.
Disk and File Systems - The module Disk and File Systems could not be loaded. Reasons same as User Management.
Windows Applications, Wine not installed. - Installer fails to install wine.
I can overcome all this with a fresh install of 7.04 or I can reload 6.10 from image backup. Others may not have the knowledge to do this.
Having looked around the Kubuntu Forums this is not an isolated incident of this type, there are a lot of Adept Manager problems listed.
This has a serious knock-on effect: The Package manager/Updater is crucial to an OS. The best OS will never be fit for purpose if it is served by a flaky updater/Package manager. I am not being negative about this because Ubuntu is good. Very good. But a stable updater that works correctly is paramount. What effect will the backlash have on Ubuntu when a lot of users, who are not particularly computer literate, purchase Dell+Ubuntu and start to have these problems?
Regards
Peter Wells.
