Bug Description

Whenever I click the message-icon in the top (next to the clock / battery status) systemtray, and select "chat", i expect Empathy to open. Preferably the chat-window, not the contactlist.

If empathy is not yet started, the contact list opens up. This is as expected.

If empathy is already open, but minimalized, neither the contact list nor the chat window opens. I expect the chat window to open if its minimalized, or the contact list, if the chat window is not yet opened.

This is my first bugreport, so please inform me if i've missed something.

I got this bug, too. in fact, pretty often it's impossible to get to the contact list when it's closed.
When I got one chat window open, clicking on empathy in the messaging menu does nothing.
Closing the chat window, then clicking on empathy in the messaging menu does nothing.
I can't even quit empathy to start it again, short of "killall empathy", that can't right?

Exactly Christoph. I find this very annoying. I have the same issues.

As part of the big bug review for 16.04 LTS, I have tested this on 15.10 and the bug is still there.

I don't see "chat" in the menu, just Empathy. However, the behaviour is the same: Clicking on Empathy opens the contact list, but not the chat window, when Empathy is already minimised.
