This is also happening with kubuntu 7.04. A google search on the error turns up this page:
http://www.nabble.com/viewport-segfault-t1250303.html
however I don't know what to make of it or where to start poking. It looks like Bob pretty much has the report covered, but please let me know if there's any other information about my system to provide which would help troubleshooting.

On my system (Ubuntu 7.04, AMD64 with kubuntu-desktop installed) I found the font error to be due to the default font, named "Sans Serif". If I switched this font to Bitstream Vera Sans, the error went away. I could not reproduce the segfault, however, even with the "bad" font. For your information, the font is used to display the framerate in the viewport.

Tried changing fonts to Bitstream Vera Sans as suggested. No effect - still crashes on attempting to draw the main window. Sorry.

Strange... Just tested on a stock x86 Ubuntu 7.04 install, and it didn't crash, even though the font error remains (it is unrelated to the crash, IMHO). How did you get to you current system config? Is there any chance there is a mix of different C++ STL versions on the system?

Nope, sorry. Fresh install of 7.04 + patches.

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 beta?
