in update manager i changed notification from Longterm to any version.
clicked check for updates.
clicked the 12.10 upgrade button.

You seem to have ubuntu- x-swat/ x-updates and xorg-edgers/ppa PPA installed. As stated in the description of those PPAs, you must purge them before attempting to upgrade your installation. So please do that and try again...
