Maximizing most applications gives a black window.

Opening Firefox (or Text Editor), and then maximizing it will give a black window. This can also be reproduced by opening more than 1 Firefox window at a time (one will be normal, all the others will black).

I can't reproduce that indicated behavior with metacity/Gnome. Can you indicate which is your WM/DM?

Intermittent bug affecting not just maximised windows but those expanded beyond a certain (small) size. I am running 7.04-desktop-amd64.

I had thought it was a compiz problem.

Same problem here with Firefox 2.0.0.8, Ubuntu 7.10 on AMD64 and compiz.
The second Firefox window opened is just reprocible black.

Right now, the only soulution is switching off the compiz-fusion.

This is not limited to Firefox, but affects all applications using Java 6. The problem does not occur with Java 7, however.
