Bug Description

I tried to pay a .wav file in totem. The audio is garbled in totem but plays back fine in mplayer or when using gst-launch from the command line. This is a problem because Thunderbird uses Totem as the default handler for .wav audio, so .wav attachments to mails will be opened in Totem.

To reproduce:
1) Open the attached .wav file in Movie Player (totem)

Expected results:
The audio file plays back with no errors

Actual results:
The audio is garbled during playback

The file plays fine through gst-launch:
~$ gst-launch-0.10 playbin uri=file:///path/to/msg0001.WAV

Mplayer also plays it without garbling the audio.

Not all .wav files are affected. For example the files in /usr/share/sound/alsa/ work fine in totem.

The audio was recorded from a voicemail box on an asterisk phone system.

There are two gst-launch-xx binaries in my system (13.04): gst-launch-0.10 and gst-launch-1.0. Playing an Asterisk-generated .wav file with gst-launch-0.10 works fine but playing it with gst-launch-1.0 results in the garbled sound.

Still the case in 13.10 !!
For me playing Wav files belongs to the core functionalities from an os, so I hope it will be fixed soon ! It the 3rd version from ubuntu not beeing able to play wave files... not really a good point , not sure If we don't need to reopen bug #1, because the war against microsoft is not won, when I see things like that !

I see this under Ubuntu 13.04 and Fedora 19, so this almost certainly needs to be filed/tracked upstream.

Confirmed on saucy 13.10, vlc plays asterisk generated wav files OK, totem does not.

This plays fine though:

I purged medibuntu's non-free-codecs and w64codecs in case it was that, but the problem persists.

I've been experiencing this on 14.04.3. The files are received from Nextiva (Voip provider) voicemail to email service.

I played around with export formats in Audacity.

On my system Totem seems to have this issue with the

Microsoft ADPCM
IMA ADPCM

encoding.

Each of these encodings causes the skipping and garbling when played in Totem. VLC, et al. seem to work fine.

totem 3.10.1
