Can't use "READ-ONLY" files

Bug Description

In a production environment where you have a MASTER image that you want to write to many flash cards, it is DESIRABLE to have this master image file's permissions set to "READ-ONLY". Furthermore when accessing a "READ-ONLY" file Win32DiskImager should "GREY-OUT" the READ button yet still allow the use of the WRITE button to burn the image to a flash card. The way the program currently works the MASTER image can easily be CORRUPTED or DESTROYED if the user accidentally clicks on the READ button instead of the WRITE button. In my humble opinion this should be corrected to support production environments where the MASTER image cannot be accidentally overwritten by a stupid user mistake.

I just tested this - set an img file to read-only via it's properties, plugged in a USB stick, selected that img file and the USB stick and clicked "Read". I got the "Are you sure" confirmation, clicked "Yes" and then got "Access Denied" for the img file, since it was set to read only.

Seems to work as desired. If I'm missing something, let me know.

When I tried to WRITE with the READ-ONLY file I also got "Access Denied".

Did you try to WRITE to a flash card with a READ-ONLY master image?

Also since there is no "ABOUT" button or --version option for the program how
can I tell which version I have?

What is the current latest version of Win32DiskImager?

Jeff:

Apparently I was using an OLDER version of Win32DiskImager.

When I downloaded the latest version win32diskimager-v0.7-binary.zip
the problem went away.

I hadn't realized that there was a newer version out there since the program
does not show it's version number anywhere in the box and does not have an
About button or any way to display the current version once you have it
installed.

Thanks for fixing this sorry to report a bug that is already fixed.

No problem - better that than to "not bother" reporting bugs at all... :-)

There is no "About" - you're right. We don't have a menu bar, but perhaps implementing "--version" wouldn't be a bad idea. The newest version shows the version number on the gui - I'm going to try moving that to the title bar and seeing what Tobin thinks...

Not sure why this was flagged as private. Changed it, and marked it as "Fix Released", as this was a bug in pre-v0.7 releases on Windows Vista/7 (due to Windows API changes).
