A query with error message found Bug #1107155 and a patch for broadcom in arch forum.
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?pid=1026525

Although they don't mention broken wireless, here wireless is running in a loop trying to connect throwing those error output in log files (syslog and kernlog).

Attached is dpkg.log of today, assuming there was some backport to 12.04 which was broken.

Workaround is to deactivate/remove broadcom-sta-wlan driver in system settings, additional drivers.
Reboot and nm connects again. IMO such a break of wlan shouldn't happen with an LTS in particular when new customers should be convinced to use Ubuntu. Query the error message, it finds plenty of users who were trapped.

@Sam_(and-sam)

Even if i deactivate/remove broadcom-sta-wlan driver in system settings, additional drivers, and reboot and connects again, it's still the same ! No way ! Still getting thousands and thousands of " ERROR @wl_cfg80211_get_station : Could not get rate (-1)" and "ERROR @wl_cfg80211_get_station : Could not get rssi (-1)" in my system log.

It's really awfully bad. No way to stop.

Is some developpers on it ?

This bug affects thousands of users, even in ubuntu 12.0.4 LTS, and is still left "unassigned" since 2013-02-03.
We can't use a Ubuntu LTS. What a regression !

Solved !

(See bug #1107155)

Uninstall completely bcmwl-kernel-source ! (seems buggy)

Install instead "b43-fwcutter" and "firmware-b43-lpphy-installer" (for BCM4312), or the others BCM installers according to your type of BCM.

Reboot => done ! No more "wl continuously spams syslog" and my wifi is stable and strong now.

hope this could help the wise ones understand what causes this issue:

on my laptop (Dell Studio 1558, 12.04), I can see the line "ERROR @wl_cfg80211_get_station : Could not get rssi (-1)" filling the syslog ONLY in KDE. In Gnome session this doesn't happen.

Bernardo,

According to responses from this bug report, choosing the right driver fixes the problem. Therefore this bug is indeed a duplicate of bug 1097519. If you disagree, please explain your reasoning before unmarking it as a duplicate.

Bernardo Reino (reinob) wrote :

This bug is actually a duplicate of 1107155 ("wl continuously spams syslog").

#1097519 has nothing to do with this.

Dario Bertini (berdario) wrote :

This is clearly NOT a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bcmwl/+bug/1107155
that bug deals with output cluttering
this deals with non-functional wi-fi (possibly, it could be marked as incomplete, since it seems hard to reproduce without doing an upgrade from a previous ubuntu version)

Lubuntu 12.04 kernel 3.2.0-48-generic.

I was getting the sys.log spammed by ERROR @wl_cfg80211.

I was using Broadcom Corporation BCM4321 for wireless and the driver was wl: bcmwl-kernel-source.

I uninstalled everything that was installed and at

http://wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43

I found the solution:
sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer

Now I have:
~$ lsmod | grep "b43\|ssb\|bcma\|wl"
b43 342801 0
mac80211 436493 1 b43
cfg80211 178877 2 b43,mac80211
bcma 25651 1 b43
ssb 50691 1 b43

and all tty consoles have no spamming errors like before.

I was getting the same issue and solved it by following the instructions in
 <a href=http://forums.fedoraforum.org/archive/index.php/t-280821.html>fedoraforum.org</a>
and
 <a href=http://www.broadcom.com/docs/linux_sta/README.txt>www.broadcom.com</a>
Which basically is to download the broadcom upstream STA driver source from broadcom, make a few minor edits to the source (explained in the fedora forum link) and compile the wl.ko module yourself, blacklist all the other broadcom modules. I sugesst reading through both pages completely.

Not only did this get rid of the log file spamming, but the connection status is now as it should be, with the Ubuntu compiled version I could only get full strength right next to the router, now I get full strength up to 15 feet away (similar to windows).

According to https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx#A11.10_.28Oneiric_Ocelot.29_-_12.10_.28Quantal_Quetzal.29-1 , "Since 11.10 the package linux-firmware-nonfree also contains b43 firmware"

Then,
I completely uninstalled bcmwl-kernel-source, b43-fwcutter and firmware-b43-installer,
and installed linux-firmware-nonfree.
Solves the problem.

and to complete the work,
according to http://linuxg.net/how-to-fix-broadcom-bcm4311-wireless-driver-on-ubuntu-and-linux-mint/ ,

Load the b43 module:

$ sudo modprobe b43

To make it work automatically:

$ sudo su
# echo "b43" >> /etc/modules

While it doesn't bother me much that code isn't what we'd all like it to be when we get it, what troubles me if darned near EVERY 12.0.4 document that is written or referenced as a help file starts with "OPEN NETWORK MANAGER".

There were a number of things that 12.0.4 could do in a LTS model so I jumped in. I'll stay because I like solving problems. What's unfortunate is many will be leaving and never come back.

This doesn't seem to be wifi related for me, since I seem to be getting:

"ERROR @wl_cfg80211_get_station : Could not get rate (-1)"

in my syslog twice every minute ON MY VPS!

It's a brand new VPS, which I've only installed zpanel on (which installs the lamps stack).

I detect great hesitation/reluctance to fix this which is disappointing considering that it's affecting LTS versions and this machine is intended to be a production machine.

How can I commission it when it's doing that right from the start? I don't want to checkout Fedora, but what option do I have?

Please scrub my last comment - I got my terminals mixed up (they all look alike!). The error I was seeing was on my local machine and not my VPS.

My local machine does have wifi and is working. However, I'm still getting the errors and this again is an LTS version.

I have this bug in Kubuntu 13.04, I couldn't connect to the wireless networks at my university (with my home wireless it worked fine) with my syslog full of those error msgs and several stack traces.

This was with the broadcom privative wl driver, I switched to brcmsmac and now is working fine.

forgot to add that my wifi card is a BCM4313 (same as the bug reporter), and this is a bug introduced with the upgrade of broadcom drivers, so this is indeed a duplicate of bug 1097519, although that bug should have a better title explaining that the bug is because of the privative driver and not because Ubuntu is using the wrong one, as wl should work for BCM4313.

Hey Guys
So i had the same Bug on my MacBookPro 5,5 running linux Mint 15 based on Ubuntu 13.04. I use BCM4322 [14e4:432b]
I think I managed to solve it by installing bcmwl-kernel-source 6.30.223.30+bdcom-0ubuntu3 in amd64 (Release) from this page : https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/saucy/+package/bcmwl-kernel-source
it seems to me that there is a new version of the driver but its not updated in the repositorys. For me the latest version was 6.2something but I found this version with 6.3something and its seems to be working for me.

Cheers
