Bug Description

The Gnome panels in Feisty seem to jump around and change when enabling and disabling Desktop Effects. Frustratingly, the applets then get loaded on the panel in places where they become hard to move.

In the linked screenshot, you will see that the area that contains the "network configuration icon" and the "RDP connection status icon" are on the right-hand side of the top pannel. I didn't put them there. They moved there by themselves during a series of disturbing crashes last night.
Also note that the "Desktop selection" applet is on the right side of the Trash Icon in the lower panel.
Because the "Move" option is disabled on the shutdown and Recycling bing icons, and you can't properly right click at all on the desktop or info panel areas, neither of these applets can be easily moved back to their normal/default locations, as I can see.

I have the same problem. For me, it seems to happen randomly and intermittently after restarting.

Same on Gutsy alpha + current updates:

Objects on Gnome panel jump around:

- Sometimes when making settings with Pessulus
- When changing screen resolution
- Sometimes when loggin in

Objects do not save their position - I'm not sure but I think it is related with that Bonobo stuff which is used in applets!?

The panel jumps around:

- When extending TFT laptop display with external monitor to the right
- With this setting making a movie or game fullscreen

Are there any fixes in sight?

These "jumping" objects are very annoying especially if you locked them on the panel and you have to unlock most of them to move them back to the correct position.

Another case is when you have setup the desktop for others which you want to administer through ssh and things are moving on panels which are hard to fix through ssh.

I have similar problem: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-panel/+bug/158388
Applets moves for example every time I run mplayer in fullscreen mode.
I found that it is caused by the fact some applets automatically changes "panel_right_stick"
attribute in gconf, although I do not know why.
Hope it helps to solving this problem. Btw. Is anybody working on this?

It seems to me, that the problem is known:
there is note "Fix positioning of applets when the panel size changes" at http://live.gnome.org/RoadMap
