Bug Description

My computer randomly crashes since a couple of days, for the first time since about the release of feisty, or some days later.
When it crashes, nothing works and caps lock blinks.

Maybe it is worth noting that on boot I get the timer not connected to io-apic message, but when I boot with noapic, wireless does not work. Hoever, this message is not new and it previously did not cause any problem

uname -r:

2.6.20-15-generic

i figured out that the problem might relate to wireless: when I am connected through the network card, the computer never locks up

see attachment.

in the mean time i uname-r changed to
2.6.20-16-generic

the most recent crash corresponds to the restart today, june 1, about 12:09. Usual effect: caps lock blinks, nothing works

Btw, reboot seem to have failed at first attempt - after I restarted again, it worked

note that I did not have this crash for 2 weeks with wireless deactivated. also note that with the recent occurence of the crash, xgl/compiz was enabled, which i also had deactivated for a long time.
thanks for help

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug does not meet the criteria for a stable release update and is being marked as Won't Fix for this particular version of the kernel. You can learn more about the stable release update process at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/StableReleaseUpdates .
However, the issue that you reported is one that should be possible to test with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Gutsy Gibbon. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the actively developed kernel. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/ .
If you do decide to test with the development release of Ubuntu please comment on this bug report and include at least the minimal information requested at http://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies . Thanks again and we appreciate your help.

Changed in linux-source-2.6.20:

Actually with

2.6.22-10-generic

I still have this timer not connected to io-apic message at boot and occasional

[ 238.084000] APIC error on CPU0: 00(40)

However, no crashes anymore. In particular, I never had this CAPS-lock-blink error for a long time (i think crashes disappeared with updating ndiswrapper)
