Bug Description

As per subject line, removable drives (in my case a USB flash drive and an ipod)
mount fine and I can browse them by using the window that pops up when I plug in
the drive or by going through /media, but the icons no longer appear on the
desktop. I'm using Hoary with the latest updates as of time of posting.

does it still happens if you restart your session ?

Well yes and no. The drives do show up on the desktop after restarting my
session, but if I disconnect and reconnect them the icons don't reappear.

I don't know when it happened, but the problem seems to be fixed. However it
has been replaced my a different, though slightly less annoying problem. Now
removable drives mount and appear on the desktop just fine, but their icons
don't disappear upon removal. Heh. Progress of a sort though.

This bug has just reappeared for me. Drives/discs mount but don't show up, so
there's now no GUI way for me to unmount my memory stick without logging out and
in again.

Discs will show up after attempting to mount them again in Computer (you get the
already mounted error of course) but there's nothing to do with drives.

Sorry, slight difference I just ran into; making _any_ change to what is mounted
will cause the previously missing icons to appear. eg. Ejecting a disc will make
the other disc and drive icons show up. Inserting a new disc will make already
inserted drives and discs appear, but _not_ the one just inserted.

what version of libgnomevfs2-0 do you have ? 2.9.90-0ubuntu2 use hal which
should improve that

That's what I have installed. I've got yet another refinement actually: the
missing icons appear from double clicking a disc (floppy, CD etc) drive in
Computer, even if there is no media in them.

do you have anything useful in ~/.xsession-errors ?

The entirety of of .xsession-errors for inserting then ejecting a cd is:

manager.c/789: New Device: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/block_Diablo II Play Disc
manager.c/825: Changed: /dev/hdc
Warning: device /dev/hdc is already handled by /etc/fstab, supplied label is ignored
manager.c/905: Mounted: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/block_Diablo II Play Disc
manager.c/918: Unmounted: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/block_Diablo II Play Disc
manager.c/851: Device removed: /org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/block_Diablo II Play
Disc

Nothing else is written whatever I tried.

Martin, any idea on this ?

More info, it looks like what I have is actually Bug 11054 (gam_server stops
working) again.

If I explicitly kill gam_server, media I insert show up properly for a while.
It stops working again when I unmount one of the drives, and possibly otherwise,
but I can't think of any particular test. Should I try something else?

reopening, the drives are handled by gnome-vfs-daemon, I don't think that's the
gamin issue. Martin any idea on what's going on here ? We probably want to get
that fixed for hoary.

With the current (2.6.10/11) Hoary kernels this happens to me, too. However, if
I boot with "noinotify", everything works as it should: icons on desktop, entry
in Places menu, icon in the "Computer" window, icon in drive mount applet. So I
indeed think that this is still an inotify/gamin bug.

It's broken again for me too. Basically drives don't appear on the desktop
until about five minutes after login, and they don't properly refresh after
they're removed/added either. I also have the problem mentioned in bug #11054.
This is all on kernel 2.6.9 since 2.6.10 seems to have a nasty usb freeze issue
on my machine.

Well the bug was fixed when they turned off inotify (as well as a number of
other things), but it has risen its ugly head once again with the latest round
of updates (as of 3/11/05). I updated the kernel image to 2.6.10-25.2, did they
turn on inotify again?

Update: The problem seems to have resolved itself without my doing anything.
Strange. I'll see if I can reproduce it, but I'll close it for now. Sorry for
bother.

I have this same problem here on ppc (all hoary updates applied as of today).
When I insert a usb disk, it gets mounted and nautilus window opens but icon
does not appear on desktop. The only way to unmount the device is as root on the
cmd. line.

The one thing is that I am using a custom 2.6.11 kernel to handle newer Apple
PowerBook5,6 hardware. I do have so the inotify patch applied though.

ok, I just tested with the recently released Ubuntu 2.6.11-1 powerpc kernel and
usb drive shows up on the desktop as expected. So I suppose it's an inotify
version/api issue (0.21 in my kernel vs. 0.19 in the ubuntu kernel)?

I'm closing the bug.

I solved it by installing gnome Tweak and selecting the Desktop tab the last option "Show Mounted volumes on the desktop"

I have not really found an error that causes this.

The error occurred after a failure of recording on a blank disc, I could not mount the disk again and moments later I error appeared.
