Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

When enabling "Workspaces on a Cube" in the "Desktop Effects" preferences panel, it appears to change the configuration of workspaces to a single workspace with four cube "sides". Behavior is similar to having four real workspaces (without "Workspaces on a Cube" enabled); however, attempting to drag the window thumbnails from one "workspace" to another does not work, since it's actually still the same workspace. This appears to be a bug with compiz itself and not with the desktop-effects setting panel, because it appears regardless of whether the cube workspaces have been configured using desktop-effects or gnome-compiz-manager (I installed gnome-compiz-manager because desktop-effects does not provide any way to change the number of workspaces.)

Actually this sounds like a bug in the workspace switcher in gnome-panel. It doesn't support viewports.

Might be a duplicate of bug #63208

Changed in gnome-panel:

with desktop effects enabled by default in gutsy, the behaviour of workspace-switcher from gnome-applets has changed.
Bug #141397 redirects here.

- With metacity it was possible to switch workspaces with mouse scroll over the
workspace-switcher - this no longer works with compiz.

- It is no longer possible to drag-and-drop windows from workspace to workspace.

I see the same behavior when I enabled visual effects. Not using "workspaces on a cube", just enabled "normal" visual effects. Had a configuration with 4 virtual desktops in one row in the workspace switcher and I can no longer drag and drop applications betweens the desktops. There is no problem in switching between desktops and opening new windows on it, though.

I've experienced this problem in Feisty but I didn't reproduce this problem on any of the 10+ computers that I tested under Gutsy, can someone reproduce that problem in Gutsy? If not, I would say that this problem only exist in Feisty.

Running Gutsy. Toshiba Portege R500. Kernel 2.6.22-14.

4 workspaces in a row. No fancy 3D effects selected.

Unable to drag applications across desktops. Mouse wheel also doesn't work - used to be able to hover mouse over workspace and scrolling moved you through the various workspaces.
