Bug Description

I installed Ubuntu 12.04.1 on my Compaq Presario 2100 (2195US to be exact). Now Shutdown, Restart, Suspend, and Hibernate don't work. I installed the latest bios I could (KA.M1.57). Shutdown and Restart worked under Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx. If I boot with "acpi=off" Restart works, but not Shutdown, Suspend, nor Hibernate. There is a dmesg message about a broken bios, but Windows XP (I am multi-booted) runs fine. Shutdown, Restart, Suspend, Hibernate work. When doing Restart, for exampe, the computer hangs with the final message being "Will now restart" "102500.5296241 Restarting system". A similar message appears when the system hangs during shutdown, except it says "Will now halt" "131.2961161 Power down.". This web site has photos of the screen when the computer hangs during Shutdown and Restart. http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2099221 (Post # 4).

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.8 kernel[0] (Not a kernel in the daily directory) and install both the linux-image and linux-image-extra .deb packages.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

kernel-unable-to-test-upstream

I am sorry, but I don't know the correct way to enter a "tag" as was requested. I edited the existing tag and added "kernel-unable-to-test-upstream". If this is incorrect please tell me the correct way to enter a tag.

I installed upstream kernel 3.8-rc5-raring as instructed. When I booted with it I got many many error messages rolling up the screen during boot. Finally the screen just went blank and the boot stopped.

Please instruct me on other tests that need to be done, or information that needs to be supplied.

ralphl, as per http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=228&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=374028#N905 an update is available for your BIOS (KA.M1.60). If you update to this, does it change anything?

If not, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date

Thank you for your understanding.

Thank you very much for replying. I could not install the bios that you recommended, because I don't have a diskette drive. However, I have found a workaround for the problem by converting to Xubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin.

Apparently there is something different in the startup for Ubuntu and Xubuntu. I switched to Xubuntu on a forum recommendation from somebody who was having the exact same problem as me (Shutdown, Restart, Suspend, Hibernate fails) on a Compaq computer (I don't know if it was the exact same model). His Compaq also would not run correctly on Ubuntu, but performed fine on Xubuntu.

I would prefer to be running Ubuntu as that is what I run on my Dell D610 laptops, a fix to this problem would be appreciated. I will try to find a way to load the latest bios from a cd or flash drive.

Thank you again,
Ralph
