system setting brightness does not save; reverts to default high on next boot

I have a computer that I use unplugged quite a bit, and like the back-light setting to be low.
So I go to System Settings / brightness and lock, and set the pointer about halfway up.
This setting does not save between boots. All my other settings seem to save, so am wondering why this is different? It shouldn't be.
