Bug Description

Hi!

I'm here once again, faithfully reporting that the 7.04 upgrade completed with plenty of warnings, but when the reboot ran: BOOM. X failed to start.

I am running an AMD64, using an ATI graphics card with the fglrx binary drivers. That worked fine before the upgrade, but as usual it seems to be a never ending source of problems.

Can anyone help me out here?

I'm sorry to say that I don't know to copy the Xorg.log0.log file to a floppy so that I can send it to you. If you tell me, I will do it of course.

I am completely blocked.

thanks - I still enjoy and appreciate Ubuntu! You guys are doing a great job!
GF

I'm attaching my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log files to help you.

It is definitely a problem with the binary ati drivers. You can see that I have this at every upgrade

See bug #73172 for report of a similar problem but not exactly the same error messages? that I had at the last upgrade.

Please can we try to fix this together? I thought that Feisty had support for the ATI binary drivers?

Thanks,
GF.

After returning to an old xorg.conf (attached) I can access my machine but I've noticed that the fonts seem to be lost, even though the xorg.conf points to the right place...

More exploration has shown me that the new version of the fglrx drivers don't work with my 9250 card!

However, the configuring of the xorg.conf file doesn't work as it should anymore.

Is there an automatic way to configure it?

Maybe update manager could prevent installing the new driver if it doesn't support the hardware anymore, and reverts the changes to xorg.conf. I'm not sure if its doable though.

This is very old. No problem on 10.04...
thanks!
