With Intel i810 driver on Dell E1505, switching display causes blank screen.

Seen on Dell Inspiron E1505 with integrated Intel graphics 945GM and using intel i810 driver. If you connect an external LCD/CRT monitor to the VGA port and cycle through all display modes using Fn+F8 , it works for the first few times and then the screen goes blank and only way to recover the system is to reboot it.

If you don't load the "glx" module in your xorg.conf - does it start correctly ?

Rez, do you think you could do a blind "dmesg > dmesg.txt" after the screen goes? Maybe there's some info in there.

I found this upstream bug, which sounds similar: https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6664
The reporter has an Intel 945GM-based system using an i810 driver, where vesa works fine but is seeing screen blanking issues when starting X.

IN the comments of that bug they ask if the issue disappears if the glx module is left out - would you mind trying this?

I reproduced it, but I believe it's a kernel bug. The system locks up entirely, no caps lock, no ping.

I'll see if there's some issue with agp/drm.

In my System it happens only with AMD64 port, before I was using x86 port and all work great, I have an EMT64 capable processor and runs debian great, all services work fine except xserver-xorg with driver i810, let me say that the error is just when unloading X, before that I can reach my desktop, use the Render, 3D accel, Composite Extension, Compiz etc but when Shuts down the Computer I get a Kernel Panic, I think to set the driver to VESA and work but haven´t DRI, 3D Accel, Composite etc.

My Hardware is:

- Celeron D 3.6 GHz EMT64
- ASRock 775i65G
- Intel® 865G Chipset
- Integrated Intel® Extreme Graphics 2 (intel 82865G Graphics)

Please upgrade the Xserver to 7.3 and the intel driver to 2.0 which avoids using the BIOS to set modes.

This should undoutably cure your problems.

I have quite same problem but without connect anything: with i810 driver (Gutsy) in my laptop, if I try to enter in console (ctrl+alt+F1) I get a blank screen and I cannot return in X neither restart GDM (ctrl+alt+F7 and ctrl+alt+backspace doens't work), I have to connect in ssh and restart the gdm manually (/etc/init.d/gdm restart).

Does it still happens in Final Ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 with the new Intel driver? Could you recheck it with the Live CD?
@michelem There were some issues with the new Intel driver and console change but they have been fixed before release for most hardware.

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any recent activity. The 18 month support period for Feisty Fawn 7.04 has reached it's end of life - http://www.ubuntu.com/news/ubuntu-7.04-end-of-life . As a result we are closing the linux-source-2.6.20 task. If someone can confirm this is still an issue with the most recent Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release that would be great. For now I'll add the "linux" kernel task but set the status to "Incomplete" until we get feedbcak. Thanks.

Hi everone,

I have a bug similar to this one with ubuntu 8.10
I have an ASIPIRE 5610Z with the some video card Intel Corporation Mobile 945GM/PM/GMS taht use i810 driver.

My bug is : when i switch a video output to VGA out. the screen is ok. but randomly, after some hour the VGA output is totally black. no screen out in VGA even if a use alt+crtl+backspace, only LVDS is working.

i attached my xorg.0.log.
the error is Underrun in pipe A !!!

only reboot solve the problem.
I have the same bug with other distribution and version of ubuntu.
