computer freezes after running kvm for the second time after boot

Bug Description

Binary package hint: kvm

Running kvm the first time after booting feisty works, but trying to launch kvm again after the first vm has exited causes the entire computer to lock up.

When the computer locks up, the mouse cursor disappears, the display stops updating, and ctrl-alt-f1 doesn't work. SysRq commands still seem to work (SysRq - S makes the HD light blink).

If kvm commands are run with -no-kvm or without the kvm module loaded, the problem does not occur. Using the -vnc switch also prevents the lockup.

Can you describe your hardware in detail?
Does this happen in gutsy?

The machine I originally encountered this problem on was a Toshiba Portege M400 tablet with an Intel Duo processor of some kind. I no longer have the original machine, though I do have another supposedly identical machine.

Gutsy won't run KVM on this machine at all, it just dies with exception 13 immediately after running kvm, before the guest OS boot even begins. This happens trying to boot from the ubuntu live CD as well as from a completely blank hard drive image.

I have the same problem, but the problem disappears if noapic kernel options is used on host-system.

This may have something to do with 0x80 delay port, because my hardware suffered from the #200057 bug.

Is this symptom still reproducible in 8.10 beta?

If you're running Hardy, could you please test this using the kvm-84 package in this PPA:

Does this solve the issue, or is it reproducible?

I'm going to expire this bug as "Fix Released", as I cannot reproduce this in Jaunty or Hardy (with the kvm-84 PPA package), and I can find no evidence of any other user reporting this against Jaunty.

If you can reproduce this against 9.04 (Jaunty), please re-open this bug (mark Confirmed), and please clearly describe the steps to reproduce. Thanks.
