Bug Description

When moving mail message between folders a copy of the message is always also dropped into the trash folder. This happens in Ubuntu Feisty.

Kernel: 2.6.20-15-generic
Evolution: 2.10.1-0ubuntu2

Thank you for reporting this bug. When you move a mail from one folder to another it is deleted from the source folder and added in the target. It happens that deleted mails go to Trash...

Nevertheless I will check more on this. I do agree it is sort of strange.

I am marking this as not-a-bug.

Upstream bug has the following comment:

"note that in evolution, "delete" means "mark as deleted", but does not move the
original email physically (this is like IMAP works). evolution's trash folder
is a virtual folder which displays all messages that are "marked as deleted"
from all the folders available.
"move" means "copy and delete the original", so you will always have a copy in
your trash (the original one)."

I am also linking the upstream bug here, but just for reference.

I can't say for certain yet, but I'm fairly sure that I found an email in the trash which didn't appear in another folder where it should have been. I was looking for a particular email and decided to look in the trash. That's where I found it and then became aware of this bug.

I get the same problem as VC. This is on Ubuntu 9.10 and Evolution 2.28.1. I copied my ".evolution" and ".gconf/apps/evolution" from a 9.04 install, perhaps that is what's causing the problem.

Hi! I don't think that's a bug. If I remember right, I got the answer
(having posted this bug a few years ago, that it's supposed to be like
that. What's bad about it anyway? Regards Karen

This is a problem for me because I use folders and filters extensively and I have over 100,000 messages in the trash now, because of this bug.

Hei! As far as I know this is no bug, but it's supposed to be like that.
Just enable the function that the trash is emptied regularly.

Regards
Karen

It's a bug to me, because:

- The point of the trash folder is so that you can delete emails without having them gone permanently, you can go in the trash to find deleted emails and restore them, as long as it hasn't been emptied. I lose this functionality if I have to empty my trash folder regularly.

- My ability to search for deleted emails is diminished, as I have to sort through 100,000 other emails that should not be in the trash folder.

- Whenever I do manually empty my trash folder, it freezes up Evolution for 10 minutes. When it comes back, only ~5,000 emails were deleted.

- It simply doesn't make sense for items copied to another folder to also be copied to the trash folder.

I'm no expert, but are you sure these e-mail programs are designed for
storing 100 000 mails?

I can recommend archiving e-mails now and then with Hypermail.

It handles it just fine, other than this bug.

Hi Karen, if "it's supposed to be like that" can you explain how it's a useful and desired feature of Evolution?

Hei, whoever is writing,

no, I can't. But I have reported this bug some years ago, and that was
the answer I got. Karen
