Test case:
open ccsm > general settings > Desktop Size
try to set vertical to 1, it sets & then resets itself to 2

If I change line 3147 in /usr/share/compiz/core.xml to "2" then I am again allowed to set vsize to 1
ie.
                        <default>2</default>
   <min>1</min>
   <max>32</max>

Yeah I find this happens randomly. But not very often. Not happening at the moment.

It's probably more likely to happen after opening the Appearance panel
which will reset vsize & hsize back to 2x2 if something else. (if ws
switcher is in unity launcher
Not sure how this relates to what I gather is the new default of no ws
switcher icon, hence 1x1

With the latest compiz (0.9.9~daily13.01.25-0ubuntu1) this doesn't appear to be an issue anymore, at least here.
(having Desktop size reset to 2x2 by simply opening the Appearance panel still is but likely not a compiz problem
