Bug Description

I wanted to print a document in duplex mode. Different applications showed a different behaviour but none of them worked as they should:

LibreOffice just didn't print in Duplex-mode. But I've chosen this mode.

Evince, using the PDF produced with LO, printed the first "package", but the second not (in fact the printer produced an empty page, then printed one page, one empty page and printed the last one), the third "package" was printed in duplex mode, but not the fourth and so on ....
The same did the HP-toolbox.

Exactly the same issue, but in my case only LibreOffice seems to be unable to print in duplex

Does your printer have a duplex unit or are you using some kind of manual duplex mode (supposed to print the odd pages, then the paper gets put back into the input tray and the even pages get printed)?

For me LibreOffice prints perfectly duplex on the HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A Plus.

Can your follow the instructions of the sections "CUPS error_log", "Capturing print job data", and "Getting the data which would go to the printer" on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems. Can you also attach the file(s) which you tried to print? Please do this for all situations with problems (LibreOffice, evince, ...).

Do not pack the obtained file together and do not compress them. Please attach them one by one. This will make it easier for the readers of this bug report to handle them.

In fact evince doesn't seem to have the problem under Ubuntu 13.04 (I've upgraded some days ago).

The HP 8500 Pro worked fine under Ubuntu (as well 12.10) but it broke down so I had to buy the 8600.

I have the HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A Plus and it always printer duplex correctly for me. So can you please try the following: Manually change the printer model/driver of your print queue to the HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A Plus.

To do so, open system-config-printer ("Printers" icon in System Settings), right-click the icon representing your HP OJ Pro 8600, choose "Properties" in the pop-up menu, then click on the "Change" button of "Make and Model" (on the "Settings" screen). Choose manufacturer "HP" and model "HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A Plus". Then choose the "hpcups" driver (is probably already pre-selected). Click "Forward" or "OK" to close the dialog.

Now try to print. Does duplex work correctly with all applications now?

Other possibility worth trying is to choose the "hpijs" driver, for both model selections "HP OfficeJet Pro 8500A Plus" and "HP OfficeJet Pro 8600". Please tell whether this helps.

The same problem.
Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS and a newly bought OfficeJet 8600 Pro.
Using hp-setup printing and scanning is ok (the network is installed as a wired network printer).
After some days I tried to have a duplex print, but I cannot do it using Libreoffice (no problem with PDF files)

Here is hp-check -t output
