Recently, a change has been made which generates a warning for many 2- or 3 axled wagons.
The warning reads : "Warning : Car with less than two axles/bogies (2 axles, 2 bogies)".
This is incorrect, because :
- many 2-axled wagons use the standard hierarchy wheel -> axle -> bogie allthough the bogie in this case is not a bogie as such but a fixed wheelset.
- there are some 3-axle articulated wagons which have a single-axle bogie as middle axle.
- there are some 3-axle wagons which have a 'moveable' middle axle which is therefor contained in a bogie - this bogie cannot rotate but it can move sideways.
- there are plenty of engines with single-axle boies, both steam ,diesel and electric - if a single axle bogie works for an engine, why shouldn't it work for a wagon?
- there were never any problems with any of these wagons (nor are there now any problems), so why suddenly issue this warning for all these waggons?
The warning is incorrect and superfluous and should be removed.
Attached : log-file with related warnings.
I've found some of these messages do point out a real error with a shape file. The most common are 2 bogies / 3 axles messages where the shape file has an incorrect hierarchy which causes at least one wheelset to not animate. The errors I've found were easily corrected with Shape File Manager.
You might think that if no-one has noticed these faults before does it really matter? However, at least while OR is under major development, I think all messages on suspected inconsistencies can be very useful in debugging.
