Hi Alistair,
  Could you include a copy of your syslog showing the irqbalance errors; it's probably be useful to include the output of dmesg, and any other relevant logs.

  OK, so it is a little chatty in syslogd - but it's still only about 1 or 2 a minute; I wouldn't have thought that would be the cause of your system load, perhaps that's something separate. Anyway, I'll leave this to someone more knowledgeable about irqbalance to look at.

I replaced the binary from the shipped version of IRQBalance (1.0.3?) to the latest provided on the irqbalance website (1.0.5) and this seems to have corrected the issue on my multiprocessor system.

Anyone affected on 12.10 can mute the syslog spam as follows (run the commands as root):

$ echo ':syslogtag,contains,"irqbalance" ~' > /etc/rsyslog.d/10-irqbalance.conf
$ restart rsyslog
