Bug Description

When I print a PDF file, somewhere halfway in the printing process the printer restarts from page 1.

On the pages already printed, colours don't look right. On the first page after it restarted printing, text is in the wrong font, on another place on the page then it should be, and colour isn't right either. Subsequent pages are OK.

This happens each time I print a PDF file double sided. Might also occur when printing other files or single side, I have not tried that yet.

3) What I expected to happen:
The document to get printed from first to last page with colours and font and layout similar to the document displayed on screen. I'm really happy with my printed document.

4) What happened instead:
The document got printed, first few pages where OK except for colours, then the printing restarted from the first page, first page completely messed up, subsequent pages somewhat OK. Lots of paper wasted, and unhappy user.

Added a picture of the most misprinted page, this is the first page of the document second time it is printed in the same print job. For comparison, it should look like http://www.nxp.com/documents/data_sheet/HEF4094B.pdf

I 'fixed' it by downgrading CUPS to :

  511 mv /usr/lib/cups/backend/ipp14 /usr/lib/cups/backend-available/ipp14
  512 apt-get install cups=1.5.2-9ubuntu1

Lucas, jorge costa,

Are you still using 12.04 LTS and are you still experiencing this problem with the latest cups package 1.5.3-0ubuntu8.6 (a fix for the cups usb backend crashing has been included)?

Thanks,
Pascal

Pascal,

Yes, I'm still having problems with this printer.

I'm still using 12.04 LTS:

lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS
Release: 12.04

And using the latest cups:

apt-cache policy cups
cups:
   Geïnstalleerd: 1.5.3-0ubuntu8.6

I just tried to print 2 pages from a larger document. Text only. The
first page repeats itself halfway a line (Top half of all the leters
printed, botom half is missing and page restarts there). The second
page, suposed to be printed on the other side of the paper
(duplexNoTumble) was not printed at all.

I tried to copy the "eigenschappen van afdruktaak" (Job atributes? The
lists starts with "atribute charset" and ends with "time-at-processing")
but they are not selectable... If there is one you are particulairy
interested in let me know.

In that same list there is the url http://localhost:631/jobs/638:

Description: Canon iP4200
Location: luke-linux
Driver: Canon PIXMA iP4200 - CUPS+Gutenprint (OpenPrinting LSB 3.2)
v5.2.7 Simplified (color, 2-sided printing)
Connection: usb://Canon/iP4200?serial=<I removed my printers serial number>
Defaults: job-sheets=none, none media=iso_a4_210x297mm sides=one-sided

Is there any way to reset settings to default? If others are not having
problems I guess it's something like that. (I tried removing the printer
and reinstalling it - that did not help)

Is there any way to test this properly? Any output I should copy here
for experts to debug?

Test page prints fine btw.

Best regards,
Lucas

Does the problem only happen for PDF printed from evince application or also other applications/files?
Can you provide the appout file as described here to see if it already has the problem: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems#Capturing_print_job_data

According to the release notes of gutenprint, the Canon iP4100 series has improved (EXPERIMENTAL) support since version 5.2.9 and 12.04 still has gutenprint 5.2.8.
Please try if the newer gutenprint 5.2.9+ included in vivid, 15.04 or 14.04 LTS solves your problem.
You can test without installing by using an ubuntu-desktop live-cd.

Or even better try the newer gutenprint 5.2.9 backported to precise from here: https://launchpad.net/~pmjdebruijn/+archive/ubuntu/gutenprint-release

I just printed a 100 page PDF without problems, using gutenprint 5.2.9
(using another computer with Debian 7 - had to add myself to lpadmin to
be able to add the printer, after that no problems).

Before this I tested on my Ubuntu computer with gutenprint 5.2.8, the
appout file is a pdf that does not have the problem.
