MTU size issues in Feisty migh be cause of slow networking

Bug Description

I recently converted form Edgy X86_64 to Feisty X86_64 released version.

I was very happy with the performance of Edgy, but am disappointed with Feisty.

A Web page that used to take under 2 seconds to render is now taking about 20 seconds. About 19 of those 20 seconds is spent 'Transferring data from ...".

I am using a laptop with a AMD64X2 4800 processor and 2GIGs of RAM.

Changing MTU appeared to help, but be applied inconsistently. See comments below.

Hi,

This is a general problem. I just used this one site for an example.

Also, Synaptic is slower, and sometimes does not successfully load a
package.

I wonder if it's a more general networking issue then. Would you please describe the networking setup you have?

Wired/wireless
Type of card being used
Stuff you did to set it up

That sort of thing.

Hi,

It is wired, using a RT2500 card. I've turned off the bluetooth and
Wifi.

I have no transmit or receive errors.

I started with a standard install, then searched on the net for
problems.

I tried blacklisting ipv6, as well as disabling ipv6 in firefox.
I tried changing /etc/resolv.conf "hosts: file dns"

Still no luck.

Oops,

My network card for the Ethernet is a RTL-8169.

I just ran across Bug #94048. I'd suggest making the changes described there and see if that helps. If it does, then please mark this bug a duplicate of that one.

Hi,

I tried it. No luck.

I have had a little success by playing with the MTU.

With the DNS(which I am using), the MTU setting should be automatic. I
found it is setting it to 1500, which is the max packet size for
Ethernet.

I manually played around with it and got the 20 second web site to load
in 6 seconds by setting it to 742. Still not up to what it should be. I
can make the number really low and get it faster, but the load times are
inconsistent, and the reliability gets worse.

I suspect that the kernel has changed the network handling, and may not
handle the MTU sizes correctly.
