Bug Description
Binary package hint: python-mysqldb
There is a bug in MySQLdb (package python-mysqldb) version 1.2.1 that causes some query results to be returned as array objects where string objects are expected. The exact reason for this behaviour is mysterious, but the problem goes away for me when installing the latest upstream version (1.2.2).

I discovered the same behavior. It happend to me while I was trying to retrieve data stored as MySQL blobs. In version 1.2.1, it was returned as array while in version 1.2.2, it was returned as string.
However, since blobs may store binary data, it is not clear to me if converting the data into a string is the correct solution.
