cannot modify firefox homepage

firefox homepage seems to be no more modificable, when I open the browser i got redirect into this page:
http://www.%u.com/

I tried to change it into Edit--> Preferences--> Homepage but it doesn't work, I restart firefox and http://www.%u.com/ appears again!

Firefox Version: 2.0.0.3

If I do File--> New window it works again, but if i close all the running istances and I restart firefox the problem appear again!

Where is your profile directory located? Is the setting still right
after you restart and just wrong page is opened or is the setting back
to wrong value?

we need a step-by-step introduction to reproduce. This appears to work for most ... so please provide info how to setup a test scenario.

I had a similar problem and just managed to solve it for me:
1) as you all described already, make sure to have the page you want as your homepage and the drop-down menu above set to "Show my homepage"
2) and this was my problem: in Ubunu, go to System->Preferences->Preferred Applications and make sure that the default web browser is set to "firefox" and not "custom".

I am pretty sure that I never changed anything here, but it might have been set to "custom" when I was upgrading to some alpha/beta releases of gutsy.
