Bug Description

When I am using the kernel 3.5.0-21, i lost my resolution and unity. I got the lower resolution possible. When I am loggin, i got a message telling me that the it is impossible to aplly the saved configuration for the screens (I do not know exactly the message in english, my version of ubuntu is in french) and a list of configuration that failed. I lost the unity interface, no dashboard, nothing just a desckop.

Booting on the 3.5.0-19 version of the kernel (in GRUB) make the all system work normally

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1092968/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. This bug did not have a package associated with it, which is important for ensuring that it gets looked at by the proper developers. You can learn more about finding the right package at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage . I have classified this bug as a bug in linux.

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport by using 'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more about this functionality at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs.

This bug is missing log files that will aid in diagnosing the problem. From a terminal window please run:

apport-collect 1092968

and then change the status of the bug to 'Confirmed'.

If, due to the nature of the issue you have encountered, you are unable to run this command, please add a comment stating that fact and change the bug status to 'Confirmed'.

This change has been made by an automated script, maintained by the Ubuntu Kernel Team.

From https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage the package should be xorg , because of the symtom "Wrong default screen resolution ". Certainly a incompability of xorg with the new kernel 3.5.0-21. But it is not the only symptom. Once I am logged, I don't have the unity interface, just my wallpaper.

Actually, I think the importance should be high, because it is impossible to use the computer anymore, and a "normal" user does not know how to boot on a different kernel.

I reinstalled all my system (with update during the installation), and now I have the problem with each kernel...

I think this problem come from a change in the way to configure the kernels. This change should have happen in an update between the update for the kernel 3.5.0-19 and an update for the kernel 3.5.0-21.

Also, I noticed that this problem doesn't happen with the nouveau drivers, but only with the nvidia drivers.

If you want me to do some tests, ask me quickly please. My computer became useless with this problem, so i think I will migrate soon to ubuntu 11.10 or to mint, and i will not be able to make some tests anymore.

If Jeremie cannot use his computer properly I think someone should update the importance to High or Critical. I can't change it.

Jeremie, would you mind opening a terminal and running "apport-collect 1092968"? It will send us some system logs that are very helpful to developers.

I forgot to add that the reason why it might not have worked the first time is because you need to have another package installed to run apport-collect. You may need to run "sudo apt-get install python-launchpadlib" before running "apport-collect 1092968"

I guess logs wouldn't be useful, but if you notice the problem in 12.04
also then you should provide logs.

So far, I don't have the problem un 12.04. But i plan to pass in 13.04, so before that, i can try again with the 12.04, and i will let you know if i can reproduce de bug or not

That sounds fine. It might not occur anymore in 12.04 or 13.04. I did have issues before (and a helpful tip for 13.04 is that you should not force shut down your computer otherwise Ubuntu will not boot, I learned that the hard way) with 13.04 though.

Hello
I'm coming back (a long time later...) and still same kind of problem.

I tried to upgrade to the 13.10, and i got very similar problem.
After installation, i get a low resolution (but the desktop has a higher esoltuion, so windows may "go out" of the screen)
Mouse doesn't work, network doesn't work, just keyboard, and not really greatly.

Without the network, i couldn't try toupdate the paackages...

I also got a weid message when i'm loggin in telling me taht many type of resoltuion were tried and that no one worked.
Difficult to speak more about this message (no copy paste, no scrennshot, next time i will try to take a picture with a camera)
I try to installattion, both clean instal (i format the root partition, i retrieve my home partition). i try to install once without downloading the update during the installation, and a second with downloading the update dureing the installation. Nothing worked...
If someon need me to debug, I think i will make two partitions, one with ubuntu 11.04 to work (working fine) and one to figure out what happen.

Jérémie, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg <replace-with-bug-number>

Thank you for your understanding.
