I was able to work around this issue by starting gmediaserver in daemon mode before running the de-install. gmediaserver
To do this you will need to edit the default config file: /etc/default/
change this line from 'no' to 'yes'
GMEDIASERVERRUN=no
cd /etc/init.d/
./gmediaserver start
then start the package removal in synaptic or by using 'dpkg deinstall gmediaserver'
(you may also want to do a 'dpkg purge gmediaserver')
I suppose this means that this is an issue with the pre-removal script where it does not check to see if the process is running before trying to kill it.
I have not tried to install the new version, but I did see another bug floating out there somewhere, ( and I seldom use the software)
