Bug Description

I am trying to play a rental dvd with mplayer and get an error about repositories. I uninstalled gstreamer adn then re-installed it.
I have tried to d/l the codecs, but when I ran sudo dpkg -i libdvdcss2_1.2.9-2medibuntu2+build1_i386.deb

I get the error about libdvdcss2.

Same thing happened to me. I have tried several versions of libdvdcss (libdvdcss2_1.2.7-2, libdvdcss2_1.2.9-1, and libdvdcss2_1.2.8-1) in combination with libdvdread3_0.9.4-5.1 and libdvdread3_0.9.4.7-2ubuntu1. The results are similar in all cases, so I do not know whether this is really a fault of dvdread and / or dvdcss. Anyway, here go the symptons. This is using libdvdread3_0.9.4.7-2ubuntu1 and 1.2.9-2medibuntu2+build1 and a system recently upgraded to Feisty (was plying OK in edgy). Xine returns these messages in the console:

I am attaching as well the (internal) traces xine gives, but I do not know whether they are of use or not.

totem --debug does not show any debug message. A warning window appears stating that "Totem cannot play this type of media (DVD) because you do not have the appropriate plugins to handle it. Please install the necessary plugins and restart Totem to be able to play this media." Quite general.

gmplayer also fails, with the following error messages:

They make me wonder whether the problem is in libdvdcss or in libdvdread

vlc, again. fails when trying to open the menus:

In the end it seems that the problem came from using a (new) DVD reader (a Matshita) which had its region unset. I do not mean it was set to zero: it was not set at all. After setting it (with 'setregion') I am able to e.g. rip a DVD.

Thanks for feedback. I'll add a 'Suggests: regionset' in the libdvdcss2 package.
