Subject: openoffice.org: writer crash in 'modify style' when selecting
 another tab

Package: openoffice.org
Version: 1.1.3-3
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

Writer crashes in the style edit dialog. How to reproduce:
1) start oowriter
2) select any style in the stylist, right-click, select 'modify'
   from drop-down menu
3) Use left mouse button to click on any tab in the dialog. writer crashes.

Because I can't modify any style in any document, I consider this bug as
rendering writer unusable.
libc version is 2.3.2.ds1-18

The following backtrace is produced:

Subject: openoffice.org: Same problem in the Character... Menu

Package: openoffice.org
Version: 1.1.3-3
Followup-For: Bug #284096

I can report a very similar problem that occurs every time I try to click on
_anything_ in the Format->Character... menu. Tab, information box, etc. I'm
running a clean install of Sarge, with only the OpenOffice packages updated
from Unstable. The strange thing is that I have another computer running
Sarge on which these packages work fine. The only difference between the two
installations is that I've got the KDE integration packages installed on the
computer where OpenOffice doesn't crash.

Thanks again for making this set of packages available in Debian---I'll be
happy to provide any additional information that I can.

I get the same problem as well. The problem doesn't
occur when using a snapshot build from oo.org. I have
a document I can provide, with which it's
reproducable. Using the unstable package.

Using the same set of packages [1] as Pontus, I can't reproduce either
of these bugs. I don't have the kde integration package installed, and
I've tried this both with and without openoffice.org-crashrep installed.
I don't have the stylist starting up by default which might change
things a little. I'm running Gnome 2.8, with metacity 2.8.6-1 and the
2.6.9-1-686-smp kernel.

If there's a document that can be used to reproduce this bug, I'd love
to get a look at it.

What about trying to help us (our time ressources are really limited -
remember: volunteers in spare time...) if you have that much knowledge
(also referring to The C++ part below I snipped in this reply..)?
This also would result in the bug probably be fixed quickly. As you are
suspecting one patch already....

We did. Chris tested -3 and I tested -4. It works here. And I tried
those steps since I knew you would reeaper trolling if the bug came back

I'm not suspecting anything : I say the bug has been reported then fixed
then reappeared with the exact same behavior. The faulty patch was
suggested by the maintainer and the fact that only few things changed
when I originally discovered the bug. Maybe it is just regenrating the
bianaries that solved the problem due to a buggy development environment.

Trolling? Hummm for me Impress is _unusable_ for anything serious (I
mean other than browsing already existing powerpoints slides).

Nevermind that's interesting because :

 1) either you do not "eat your own dog food" and do not use the exact
same binaries/libraries that are in the package (or you distribution is
not up to date. Mine (sid) is updated daily). Have you a recent sid
incarnation?
 2) or the bug is not in the binaries themselves but in the environment.
I will try to see if it also occurs like the previous time on my laptop
as well. But I'm rather confident.

I have the following openoffice packages set :

 openoffice.org
 openoffice.org-bin
openoffice.org-debian-files (BTW this one is not at the same revision
it is still -3)
 openoffice.org-help-en
 openoffice.org-help-fr
 openoffice.org-hyphenation-en-us
 openoffice.org-hyphenation-en-gb
 openoffice.org-kde
 openoffice.org-thesaurus-en-us
 openoffice.org-mimelnk
 openoffice.org-l10n-fr
 openoffice.org-l10n-en

BTW if I purge openoffice.org-kde to see if it makes a difference : no
difference.

> Which I again can't reproduce either.

So we need to wait until other report the same bug also so that we can
decide if its you environment that is not normal or average user ones...

I will update my laptop, with today sid and see if the bug is there also.

Updated my laptop with sid of today (97.2 Mb!). Rebooted to be sure.
Then tested : the exact two same bug are there (word color selection
broken and crash in character->character effect).

So you setup is probably more unsusual than average user one's.

BTW as soffice is a multi-threaded application, do you use a 2.6 kernel=20
or a 2.4 kernel? It will make a diff=E9rence when testing because in a=20
case you will use NPTL pthread library implementation (and locking) and=20
in the other linuxthread threading implementation. The NPTL=20
implementation is much faster and data locking/corruption bug may be=20
triggered when using NPTL.

I have the same problem too (modify style / format character).

But I remarked the following behaviour: The error does not occur when I
use OpenOffice in Gnome, but it does when I use it in Enlightenment.

In addition when I change the style in Gnome and a do not leave the
font-tab selected, I can also switch between tabs in Enlightenment after
that.

You are right : only gnome _seems_ to work but in fact it corrupt
something too : the color of the master slide footer title changed from
yellow to black...

I also tested fvwm2 and it crashes as KDE does. Does it ring a bell?

Maintainers could try to reproduce the bugs on KDE if they use gnome as
their favorite window manager...

I was having this problem previously. Selecting font tab in modify style
Or Format->Character would crash Writer.

This was on a new sarge/sid KDE desktop that I reinstall a couple weeks ago.

So last week (on the 10/01/2005) I was getting this happening with a
document I was writing. Now today for some reason its not occuring.

Unfortunately I don't have apt-listchanges install, otherwise I might
tell if anything I've upgraded since this date might have affected this.

I confirm this chnage. However, single word color selection is still
impossible (see bug #289715) and, from experience, a bug that
misteriously disappear may also reappear...

Hi there,

I read your discussion on the bug tracker. I'm experiencing the same
problem as described here and on bug #289715, using OOImpress and Gnome.

If required I can send a document on which this occures, in case this is
caused by some corruption in the document metadata or similar thing.

Sorry for not being more helpful right now.

I still can't reproduce this problem on my system, so I need your help.
Please download this file:

http://people.debian.org/~halls/openoffice/test/libsvt645li.so.bz2

It is a version of the library that crashes with debugging symbols included.
bunzip the file and copy into /usr/lib/openoffice/program, replacing the file
that is there from the package.

Then, reproduce the crash. When the crash dialog comes up, do not click it
away but instead execute this from the command line (make sure you have gdb
installed)

echo thread apply all bt > gdb.script
gdb -p $(pgrep -u $USER soffice.bin| head -1) < gdb.script | tee oo.log

Please send oo.log to the bug report.

Thanks
Chris

Thanks a lot, that helped a lot. I have updated that library. Could you
please try the new one? It won't fix the problem but should give me more
information about the problem. Sorry it is much larger than the previous
library because it includes full debugging information for gdb. Please send
me an oo.log, and also the console output from the crash (you will see some
extra messages beginning FontList::Get just before the crash)

Thanks

For the record:

The key to reproudcing this are the following conditions:

- Not using KDE or Gnome plugin (or using OOO_FORCE_DESKTOP=none)
- No CUPS server running (maybe no printer queues at all on the system)

Finally I can reproduce this crash.

Thanks to Alexandre for giving me access to his machine to find this

To work around this bug, install the KDE or Gnome interface and configure OOo
to use it.

Chris,

I would also like to thank you for taking the time for chasing this bug.
Indeed it seems finally to have something with printing as initially
suggested (or cups server support at least). Could you see if you can
reproduce also the bug #289715 in the same non working condition.

I have indeed added the KDE look and feel package in the mean time which
explains why the bug did disappear.

Subject: Test library for OOo impress fixes

Hi all,

Thanks to Alexandre's help I was able to reproduce these problems on my
machine and, after much digging around in the code, was able to find a
solution that fixes the bugs on my system.

I have uploaded a library here for you to test:

http://people.debian.org/~halls/openoffice/test/libpsp645li.so.bz2

Please bunzip into /usr/lib/openoffice/program, replacing the existing library
there.

For the record, here is a short explaination of the problem: When reproducing
the crasher in impress->format->character->change tab, valgrind reports that
memory is being read that has already been deleted:

Address 0x1CC6F654 is 20 bytes inside a block of size 92 free'd
[...]
by 0x8086B16: operator delete(void*) (in soffice.bin)
by 0x21811850: SdDrawDocShell::SetPrinter(SfxPrinter*) (in libsd645li.so)
by 0x216FD206: SdWindow::DataChanged(DataChangedEvent const&) (in
libsd645li.so)

The SetPrinter event is triggered by a SALEVENT_PRINTERCHANGED event which is
generated whenever CUPSManager::checkPrintersChanged is called, which does
not appear to be correct. Since the 1.1 code does not seem to have been
tested with such dynamic printer updates, I have disabled them, and now
printer queues are only enumerated on startup.

Thanks
Chris

I have tested the library using ooimpress and indeed it fixes the bug
related to selecting a single word for changing the color.

I would like to point out, that, as suggested from the beginning :
 1) the two bugs (crash using character menu, and single word color
modification) are indeed correlated,
 2) are due to the new enhanced cups printer server code,

Anyway thanks a lot for the time dedicated to fixing this bug. I will be
able to remove my non debian binary copy of OpenOffice.

Keep up the good work,
