Bug Description

Feisty 7.04 x86 32bit

Trying to listen to this RealAudio stream http://cbc.ca/asithappens/media/dailyshow/2007-04-19-aih1.ram

Helixplayer totally useless since it does not support this format. Had no choice but to install RealPlayer 10.0.8.805 from commercial applications. While it installs, it does not configure itself to automatically handle this stream. I had to manually select realplayer from /usr/bin and make it default application. Solution is not acceptable to newbie since he/she would have no idea what real player binary is called or where it is located. Totem codec handling improvements work great for Microsoft and Apple formats but does not support platform neutral vendor Real? Ubuntu needs to better support vendors who are "Linux friendly". Real is sole or secondary format for many National public broadcast news sites like CBC Canada, BBC UK, ABC Australia's (http://www.cbc.ca/radioshows/, http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/ http://www.abc.net.au/rn/encounter/default.htm). If WMA and MOV formats are relatively painless on 7.04, the Real formats should be also. I realize that Real is special case since WMA and MOV support are handled within Totem.

BTW, installing Realplayer under WinXP for this same file was painless since it automatically updated Firefox to support it within the external Realplayer application.

This bug should be forwarded to Real since they are responsible for application installation issues? If yes, inform them they are pushing Ubuntu users to select "Windows Media player" over "Real Player" since Ubuntu automatically makes Windows Media Format the "better supported format"

I did notice that Real .rpm streams seem to work fine with Firefox.

RealAudio is a proprietary audio format developed by RealNetworks. The issue you describe is from RealPlayer and should be raised directly with RealNetworks.

Automatic RealAudio codecs installation (if at all possible) is another completely different issue.

Forgot to mention RealPlayer is also proprietary software which Ubuntu developers can't modify or fix.
