The initial problem was found on an 'edgy' system.
When installed under 'feisty' the following errors are also seen, which look to be related.

/tmp/zmandavrcx:126: warning [p 2, 6.7i]: cannot adjust line
/tmp/zmandavrcx:155: warning [p 2, 10.8i]: cannot adjust line

This bug has been fixed as debian bug 436523 : /usr/bin/barcode: man page run together. This fix is now available in Hardy.

barcode (0.98+debian-3) unstable; urgency=low

  * doc/manpager seems to need gawk to produce proper manpages
    (Closes: #436523).
