unity desktop freezes after login (with ppa:unity-team/staging on virtualbox vm)

Almost immediately after login, the unity desktop freezes and is unusable. The launcher is visible with a purple tinted background. The panel is visible but there are no indicators.

This issue was found using a virtualbox vm using ppa;unity-team/staging. dpkg --list output is attached.

I purged the staging ppa, got back a working unity desktop, then re-installed staging ppa. Desktop once again froze.

Retried the staging ppa on a bare metal system (w/ nvidia graphics) and there is no freeze.

I can not reproduce this with 6.12.0daily12.12.05bzr2971pkg0raring0. Marking as invalid.
