Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

Upgrading from Edgy to Feisty using the Alternate CD and the instructions here (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading).
First I got the "calculate" error (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/+bug/107881) when I did not choose to fetch updates from the Internet. When I tried again and did choose to fetch the updates, everything went smoothly until it started the installation of packages. This failed with the gnome-power-management package.

From the log it looks like the CD has a problem. Could you please run the cdrom test (boot from the cd and choose "Check CD") to see if it is ok?

Michael Vogt (mvo) wrote : Re: CD-based upgrade from Edgy to Feisty failed (bad disc)?

If it turns out to be a bad disk, update-manager should first copy the files to HD and then start the ugprade to avoid that this is discovered during the upgrade.

It turned out that the disk was fine (I booted the computer with it in the CD-ROM drive and did an integrity check).
When I first got the error, I found the file with problems, opened it with file-roller and extracted its contents, and I had no problem with that.
I ended up installing Feisty over Edgy, instead of upgrading.

I concur with Michael that it looks like a hardware problem: either a temporary problem with the CD, or possibly with the hard disk. I disagree with Michael that it makes sense to copy files to the hard disk first: that slows down the upgrade, and introduces problems related to available disk space.

Other people don't seem to have had this problem, and it happened a long time ago. Perhaps it would be appropriate to close the bug report, on the assumption that it was a hardware fluke?

Thanks Lars for looking into this again. I think your argument is good, if anything this is a dpkg bug (or a fluke). I think closing the bug is appropriate at this point (edgy is no longer supported).
