I guess the error is caused by the wrong install-info script. Install-info is also provided by TeXLive (TL) that I installed manually to have TL 2007 and the TeXLive path is searched before the system path. I just chmod -x the TL install-info and the upgrade process is still running. With 5.10 I had a similar problem I just remembered ... I wonder why I didn't had this problem on my office PC with the same setup (Breezy and TL 2007).

Thanks for this additional information.

To what location did you install the install-info script? Could you attach it to this report please?

thanks,
 Michael

TeXLive installs it at /usr/local/texlive/2007/bin/i386-linux/install-info.

And that path was in your PATH?

I guess the fix here is to setup a standard PATH when runing the upgrade to avoid this kind of behaviour.

TeXLive offers an option to create symlinks of the binaries in /usr/local/bin which is in PATH. That explains why this problem did not occur on my office PC where I did not use this option but added /usr/local/texlive/2007/bin/i386-linux/ to PATH---*after* /usr/sbin.

Yes, this is still true if you install TeXLive not with the package manager and let create symlinks as described on 2007-04-26.
