Bug Description

After kernel update from 3.5 to 3.7 none of the 3 available drivers work on HP Pavilion dv6000, nVidia Graphics.
Using one of the two proprietary drivers, screen resolution is set to 1024x768 and login is possible only under gnome interface.
Using open source driver, screen flicks vertically and system is unusable.

Native resolution is 1280x800

Proprietary drivers are:
- nvidia-current-updates
- nvidia-experimental-304

OpenSource driver is:
- xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

I do not boot to Unity or an HP pavillion nor any branded one. What I have is my desktop parts assembled, to name a few (Asus P5NSLI, Intel 775 CPU, NVidia GPU). No issues at all with Kernel 3.5 .
It gets to as far as loading the CPU Clock speed then it hangs even if it is on Recovery Mode.

Since a group of users are unable to start Unity and there is no workaround for the problem, I think the importance of this bug should be "high".

I've had the same problem until I downgraded the kernel. Open Software Center and search for „kernel 3.7”. Remove everything related to this kernel and keep the old one instead.
For me this did the trick.

The patch worked, but I think it is better to change the GRUB menu and keep the default boot with kernel 3.5
I'm sorry for not being able to use kernel 3.7.

Walter Ribeiro, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ .

If it remains an issue, could you please run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal), as it will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report:

apport-collect -p xorg <replace-with-bug-number>

Thank you for your understanding.
