Bug Description

My sound has suddenly stopped working in Feisty. I've been running Feisty on my IBM Thinkpad R50e for about a month with no problem, but yesterday, I was enjoying some music before getting to bed - then I put the laptop into hibernation and went to sleep. When I started it up again this morning it no longer worked, neither with or without headphones.

I've tried everything in https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DebuggingSoundProblems to no avail.

I will attach files with the output of the debugging commands listed there...

-($ asoundconf list
Names of available sound cards:
I82801DBICH4

-($ tail -2 /proc/asound/oss/sndstat
Mixers:
0: Analog Devices AD1981B

Yes, I have got exactly same problem, I am using a IBM X31, only after the fresh power on (even reboot doesnot work), the fresh power on means to power off the laptop, then plug off the power supply and wait for several seconds, ok, this first boot is ok, the sound is good. but after I make the laptop into hibernation, after it comes back, the sound is disappeared, so far not found other problems.

and I also found same bug reports as bug#103004 and bug #98605.
It is really annoying.

and, this only happens in 7.04, I used the 6.10 for several months and everything is good.

Hi, i have a similar problem, although i am on a desktop (amd64). Ive been running feisty since day one, and everything was working fine. then, one day this week i booted and to my amazement, NO SOUND!

everything seems to be ok though, i reinstalled alsa, blablabla, but simply no sound. i tried with head phones, etc. but nothing comes out. Nothing in the UI indicates any problems.

Can anyone help to figure our how sound can magically stop? (this is really annoying for media professionals)

thanks!

Note: i am no linux specialist, simply one of those average users that jumped from windows to linux.

oh well, just found the answer on another bug report :)

perhaps it could help others. using:

sudo amixer, PCM 0 had a 0% sound level (no idea how it got there though). using alsa mixer, increased volume and now it works! (for a newbie, i guess its a little wired that the GDM volume displayed is not the only controllable volume. newbies and average users don't know about alsamixer)

anyways, works for me, please ignore my entry!
