sordoman:

Compiz/Unity is now working because removing xserver-xorg-video-ati has forced it to drop back to software rendering (slow).

To help us figure out the problem, please:
  1. Reinstall the package so you can reproduce the bug.
  2. Run "/usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p" and paste the output here.
  3. While the bug is happening, make a copy of ".xsession-errors" from your home directory and attach it here.

Changed in compiz (Ubuntu):

Thanks sordoman.

While the error message is completely different, this is actually a regression of bug 1039155, which is now being tracked in bug 1066764. The issue is that compiz forcing LLVMpipe on your system (rightly so) is not working and Mesa is still trying to use the hardware.

Discussion continues in bug 1066764.
