Bug Description

Binary package hint: gnome-utils

I just installed Feisty Fawn. All seems well, except the desktop switcher. I have set the desktop switcher to four desktops. Desktop 1 seems to operate normally. However, if I switch to 2-4, I get the background wallpaper, a bottom panel, no top panel, no mounted disk icons, and no result when I right click on the desktop background. I can create a top panel, but it is offset from the top margin. When I switch back to the first desktop, I have to click on the wallpaper to get the bottom panel to reappear.

I looked in /var/log/messages and found this:

Apr 20 12:57:15 arwen gconfd (tsmith-6925): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.mandatory" to a read-only configuration source at position 0
Apr 20 12:57:15 arwen gconfd (tsmith-6925): Resolved address "xml:readwrite:/home/tsmith/.gconf" to a writable configuration source at position 1
Apr 20 12:57:15 arwen gconfd (tsmith-6925): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults" to a read-only configuration source at position 2

Apr 20 12:57:15 arwen gconfd (tsmith-6925): Resolved address "xml:readonly:/var/lib/gconf/defaults" to a read-only configuration source at position 4
Apr 20 12:57:15 arwen gconfd (tsmith-6925): Resolved address "xml:readwrite:/home/tsmith/.gconf" to a writable configuration source at position 0

I think I may need to reinstall some gconf stuff?

One thing I just looked at was my choice of login shell. I installed tcsh and used that as my default shell. I just changed that
back to bash, logged out and logged back in. Now, I have both panels in shells 2-4, but still no mounted disks show on the desktop and no right click for 2-4.

The system is also laggy when redisplaying Desktop 1, taking a little while to show the windows open on the desktop.

I rebooted the system again, and I am back to where I was before, now with no panels, no mounted disks and no right-click for
panels 2-4.

Well, I never had this problem with Edgy, so this is new. I installed mostly the same applications on Feisty that I had on Edgy,
but a few were different.

My solution was to move .gconf and .gconfd to some backup directory and restart gnome. I lost all of my settings, but things
appear to be back to normal.

I had similar problems while having desktop effects on, but I just experienced the switcher freezing on another pc that doesn't have any effects on.
